RIP “Binky” the Makah Elder that Stood up for the Whales!

remember that she told me that it was not the culture of the Makah, but it is only a small group of young Makah who was trying to kill whales. This group was incited by the Japanese whaling industry. The original plan was for a commercial venture to develop and supply whale meat to Japan. The commercial plans were soon scuppered, but the Makah tribal council decided nevertheless to proceed with the reinstatement of whaling. The federal government provided the Makah of money for training and support, including the funding of delegates of the International Whaling Commission to submit their application for whaling recommended. The Makah elders Jesse Ides, Dottie Chamblin and Alberta Thompson attended the IWC meeting in Monaco in 1997.
